B. Saroja Devi, some of the leading women in South Indian cinemas, whose inter-industry stars spanned Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films, died on July 14 at her residence in Malleswaram, Bangalore. She was 87 years old at the time. The veteran actor has been affected by age-related illnesses for some time.
Saroja Devi began her showcase career in the mid-1950s and advanced to some of her prolific and bankable actors. She has received the best recognition for her intensive collaboration with celebrity actors MG Ramachandran (MGR), Sivaji Ganesan and NT Rama Rao, and has shown the reverse in 20 other films.
Curiosity in her early dance led to the film audition. After debuting in the Kannada language film Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955), she soon transitioned to Tamil and Telugu cinemas. She received Padma Shri in 1969 and Padma Bhushan in 1992, one of the many highest civilian honors in India. Different honors include Kalaimamani from Tamil Nadu, Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award in Karnataka, and the NTR National Award in Andhra Pradesh.
In 1967, Saroja Devi married engineering contractor Sri Harsha. The couple remained until their death in 1986. She is the chairman of Karnataka Film Improvement Company and a jury member at the National Film Awards in India.
Her ultimate movie appearance was in the 2019 Kannada movie Natasaarvabhowma, in a cameo appearance.
