Joel Potrykus doesn't want to blow up Sean Baker's phone.
“I asked him to question and answer reasonably, and I made a mistake to place cash rewards there,” Potrykus admitted. “It was immediately strange. I should never talk about cash in any way. He always replied…I'm just leaving it.”
It's not surprising that Potrykus and the director “Anora” have been in the communiqué over time. Baker started making movies earlier, but every filmmaker became an American independent favorite in the 2010s, such as Baker’s quick conversation sex work, unfortunate “Orange” and Potrykus’ Sofa Mota Slasher “Buzzard” (Buzzard) “Buzzard” (Buzzard) – with bold characters – humorous characters, out-of-the-art stories – messy storylines and efforts, and drawing their efforts in their range, all over their streets.
Potrykus once again joins his new, mysterious film Vulcanizadora in that saddle. Now, with Los Angeles added to Laemmle Noho 7, the micro budget is characterized by a welcome return from the director who did not make a movie because the 2018 Apocalypse was in a living room comedy “Lexyer”. However, these years and the whole new obligation of fatherhood – did not alleviate his dying pan sensitivity (although Portrecus's baby does seem to have in the movie, and also participates in the identity of his son, playing his personal death-fighting dad role).
“Man, I'm not doing 'Sharkboy and Lavagirl' or whether these movies are done by Robert Rodriguez. I don't want to make movies for My kids,” Portrecus said. “It’s a thing, and I won’t be really happy. ”
Of course, the suggestion to suggest “vulcanizadora” to a student at the academy is terrible – partly because of its sudden, amazing violence, but this is largely due to its informal, shocking disconcerting. The main half is Potrykus's joint privileged and crazy fanaticism (Joshua Burge, the director's co-muse) marching into the woods, holding a peculiar metal mask, the restrictive Gatorade offers the restrictive Gatorade. Party movies are often called “Crowds” (Potrykus has a lot of jokes in retailers), but these men will reveal their souls earlier than the mysterious mission. The second act of the film wandering again in civilization is in a way that is painful to some extent – and is exactly in line with Potrykus's trick, as he spins the humor of the gallows, but damages the lingering coma.
“I'm in Michigan, so I absolutely don't know what these movies will take into account. The consensus seems to be that I've gotten a model about the lazy guys, arrested growth and steel music. It feels largely anti-punk rock and can continue to make movies that match that model. But, it's simply a movie. The movie I made. “It's one of the many reasons I don't like having supervisors.” They will actually think, 'Okay, we'll give you your model. 'I really don't know what this phrase means. ”
I love revealing it's a sequel to “The Buzz” where you're going to retake Derek's position – and say goodbye to the character in a way. As time goes by, not many people have the chance to play the same person. Are you related to him?
Since I perceive Derek, I do love Derek. I really feel unhealthy when I personally laugh at Derek. It’s humorous to see people laugh at personality and characters who don’t realize it. Not that they were bullied. But, since he didn't know everyone was laughing at him, I really liked Derek. Like I don't want to admit, this is my favorite character: a complete motorcycle fool. Once we had the shot, I would say, “Oh, we can only smash branches into the wood. These guys want to do that.” But that means Derek's concept is just my concept. I can't separate. But sooner or later, you'll be shocked by how your collaborators will maintain Derek Round. Let's see if it happens.

You might actually perceive Derek by his pop culture reference. “It's like the 'Indiana Jones' movie.” Or when he sings.
I don't care if people will assume it, but I'm not a fan of Godsmack. What a certain age, it is an inevitable factor in rock radio scanning. That shit music form is everywhere. This is a track Derek will love. Or “Quick and Gale: Tokyo Rafting” has become Derek's favorite movie. Once we went out to shoot, I had a bunch of index cards in my pocket. I just whipped one and said, “We will wander in a pile of woods among my friends’ suggestions.” I’ve been living in Derek Life for years. I'm just Derek.
I was shocked to listen to your improvisational words. In your earlier movie interviews, you are famous and you rehearse earlier than taking photos.
Josh and I used to do a ton because we didn’t actually know what we were doing. At this level, we get a nonverbal language between us. This is the same as my DP. The goal is always: “We’re going to be a band and jam.”
In one way, this will almost ruin you: stay in touch with the small crew.
I don't understand how most people do it. Like, make a movie. Especially there are 100 or 200 people. What is that? You were the foreman of the development kit at the time. How about emotions or artwork there? I do not understand. A band entered a studio, got to know each other for a long time, practiced, grew up collectively, and was on the street. However, a movie is like, “Oh hey, I’m the assistant voice when we speak.” “Oh hello, I’m the DEC’s personal.” Now that we’ve had dinner, do we know each other? “Are you from this place?” Oh my god, what kind of artless nonsense is that? I think this is the result of how people keep themselves. However, I never want a reason to do so. It's by no means: “It can be awesome job.” It's just the band's mindset. If we make money, that's cool.
Even so, “vulcanizadora” really made me a barely big manufacturing industry. It has several additional manufacturing banners that you can also shoot on 16mm. But if that's what you can afford, are you simply going back to the digital mannequin of quasi-bone, “Buzzard” or “Ape”?
I really don't feel they've scaled up. For me, the “alchemy dish recipe” is the most important rebound, from six people to 26 people in love. This is very powerful. So we scaled it again. We want to shoot movies now and have a higher mic, but my ambitions are still pretty small. I really feel a responsibility for those who provide me with cash. But, over the same time, I really liked them and it was the possibility of what we were going to do. I have Do this. So if you can do nothing to compromise, then this might be better. It's a threat, but these movies are still very underestimated.
I feel very convinced of this viewing of Gus Van Sant's “Gerry”. I don't know this is your specific level of inspiration.
Every few years, I'll hit Van Sant. I re-watched “Gerry” and I was forgotten. It ends up in a place where I think it actually gets attention. I used to think, “I believe these guys have been on a task in the market. I should write this movie as a replacement.” That's the movie.
It's not an annoying way to get the concept of a movie: watch different movies and then make you think you're watching the movie you've been watching.
This doesn't happen to me often. But, I used to be like, “Man, I might do this, and it could be pretty bad.”
I would like to briefly ask about your work on film and video manufacturing at Otani State University. It's old-fashioned, but have you ever worked with college students to achieve something?
I don't need them to watch a few of my movies. They are questions that I really want to cause warnings. They have been the main ones that push me: “Joel, your movies aren't necessarily about men only.” So after I shoot short films with them every summer, it's always about women. I also realized that it was hard for me to point to my classmates, and this is a scholar I could stick to. I once thought, “Oh, I’m simply immature.” This is one way I understand how to write down a character. There is motivation, one of my movies is not romantic because it makes me really embarrassed.
I'm trying to think about a Joel Potrykus movie “Ploce” and going to the fitness center at 6 a.m.
I tried to get earlier than that. Feel so synthetic and clichéd. It looks like a script. I can't do it at all, man.
