Belgian helicopter writer Laura Wandel made his debut in 2021 “Playground” and about two siblings at Main College will be a sure reward for the Cannes Film Festival. What impressing narratives are there?
I feel attracted to the world of the pediatric ward – actually, another Belgian institution – because it presents an attractive social illustration and because it returns to the world of childhood. The institutions are curious about me because they are probably a mini society with stratified relationships, and they themselves have well-defined norms and legal norms that often find themselves causing systemic violence. I quickly felt the need to go there to biography and face the bottom truth by assembling with the welfare care staff. … From there, I got here and explored the concept of a pediatric nurse’s perspective who faced a child’s pain and went beyond her work framework to help him. Children's curiosity gradually became the starting point for discovering morality and human battles.
Have you done a lot of analysis with the incredible Léa Drucker who performed Lucy, a senior pediatric nurse?
At first I did a lot of analysis alone. I spent weeks watching a pediatric ward in a Brussels hospital, which allowed me to master the internal work and the overall social dimension I felt. I learned there about the total complexity of this profession. I have had the ability to see, especially how intertwined medical, social and empowering aspects, and the difficulty of a child’s happiness is completely inseparable from the connection with a mom or dad. Soon I accompanied Léa to the same hospital for a day so she could observe and absorb the nurse's gestures and attitudes. Throughout the shooting, a nurse could provide information to Léa throughout the scene…I need to point out Lucy’s role as a warrior and focus on these people through her spotlight, whose work environment ruins the careers that deal with others.
Among your producers are the Darden brothers and their manufacturing company, Les Movie Du Fleuve, which is almost like the mark of excellence in a social cinema.
I met the Darden brothers, especially Luc Dardenne, at the 2014 Cannes Film Pageant, when my short film was chosen among the official contenders. I then asked him to make suggestions on the script about the “playground” and, besides the modification, I seemed pure and obvious, asking Les Movies Du Fleue fluid to co-produce the subsequent film. Luc Dardenne directed the script for “Adam's sake”, and I might say that the popularity of their manufacturing companies helped a lot of financing.
What changes are there between a skilled director actor and a non-professional young man?
This is a completely different way of working. For non-professional young people, this is a long-term job and requires a lot of preparation. I find that non-professional young people usually guide them more simply, and are aware of their presence and what they convey. Working with knowledgeable actors may result faster, but professionals can determine efficiency mechanisms and habits compared to young people. It’s not at all times to interrupt them from these habits. Paradoxically, I usually find that knowledgeable actors are much worse than non-professional young people.
Each of your options is under 80 minutes. What do you think of movie size?
As for my film, the short period has not been completely premeditated, except that our will has allowed us to really feel the mad rhythm of the caregiver. During that period, I felt the film was well advised. Rhythm is crucial in my story, and being too verbose will ruin that rhythm. Searching is a very troublesome stability. A very powerful factor for me in the past period is that the audience is being stuck in a movie. I prefer it when the story reaches its goal, without gilding.
What followed?
The next step was to start researching my subsequent films, as I planned to impress the actual specifics. So I will learn a lot and analyze their lives.
