“The Promised Sky” followed Pastor Iverian and former journalist Marie for 10 years in Tunisia. Her residence becomes a refuge for Naney, a young mom looking for a bigger future and Jolie is a strong student who brings the hope of their family. Amid the intense social local weather, the arrival of a little bit of orphans challenges their sense of unity, revealing everyone’s vulnerability and strength.
The script was written by Sehiri, Anna Ciennik and Malika Cécile Louati.
Commenting on the connection between Tunisians and immigrants from different components of Africa, Sehiri said: “As a Tunisian lady, I’m angry to see that we are not subject to immigrants of dignity, no matter how rustic we are from such a large diaspora.
Not long ago, tensions in Tunisia over its migration difficulties have increased. Sehiri's feedback: “At first, my intention was not to record what happened in Tunisia, but over time, the film began to reflect the political situation of state affairs. The reality fell into the stories we've been writing.
“As mass arrests and raids collapsed throughout Tunisia, we began to ask ourselves: How do we breathe these tensions into our stories, turning the characters into obsolete, simplified stereotypes? We have been trying to get a little bit about what happened and thus stay away from any unconscious violence in order to see the lives of these girls. We need the lives of these girls.
Photography is created by Frida Marzouk, who works with Abdellatif Kechiche on “Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013), and not long ago Lina Soualem for her documentary “Goodbye Tiberias” (2023) (2023).
